Kosbaar Kitchen | Plant-Based Recipes Cape Town

There is no institution more sacred in South African culture than the braai. The fire, the smoke, the boerewors coiling on the grid, the cold drink in hand, the argument about whose fire is better — it's not just cooking. It's community.
And for a long time, if you were vegan, you stood at the edge of that circle and watched.
That's changing fast. South African plant-based butchery has come a long way in the past few years, and what's available now — from vegan boerewors that sizzles exactly like the real thing, to plant-based ribs with genuine smokiness and bite — is genuinely remarkable. We know, because we make some of it.
This guide is for every South African who wants to host a vegan braai, attend one, or simply understand what the fuss is about.
What Do You Need for a Vegan Braai?
The Main Protein — At Kosbaar, we stock plant-based boerewors and BBQ ribs from Romeo & Vero, Cape Town's pioneers in plant-based butchery. The boerewors has the same snap when it hits the fire, the same char. Your guests will not know it's vegan unless you tell them.
The Sides — Braaibroodjies with dairy-free cheese, roasted mielies, chakalaka, coleslaw made with vegan mayo, roasted butternut. A vegan braai spread can be more interesting than a traditional one.
The Sweet — Our Vegan S'mores were made for exactly this moment — dark chocolate and marshmallow, dairy-free, toasted over coals. Four per pack. Non-negotiable.
The Vegan Braai Box
Our Braai Box comes with plant-based ribs (4 servings), boerewors (5 sausages), and two packs of S'mores — everything for four people, from freezer to fire. R495, delivered across South Africa.
Will Meat-Eaters Enjoy It?
Yes — if you cook it right and don't apologise for it. Don't announce it's vegan the moment the fire is lit. Cook it properly. Let the boerewors char. Rest the ribs. Serve it with confidence. The food wins the argument.
Tips for a Great Vegan Braai
Cook from frozen correctly. Ribs and boerewors go straight from frozen onto medium heat. Don't rush it — patience is the difference between great and bad plant-based braai.
Use a grid basket. Plant-based sausages are more delicate than meat. A basket keeps them intact while they develop their char.
Season everything. Baste the ribs. Salt the boerewors. Vegan proteins respond to seasoning exactly like meat does.
